Last Friday Ur. Debbie Collins became the _ first woman to swim around Bowen Island. Last summer her husband Shane put his name in the record book as the first person ta ever cir- cumnavigate the residential istand. “I never had any feeling that [ would have to stop, or that I might not make it,” Debbie said following the nine-hour, 20-minute effort. In addition to being the first wontan to accomplish the daunting fe : also holds 4 ¢ band’s mark by 88 minutes. Unlike Shane's swim last summer, the 38-year-old sports medicine specialist had perfect conditions last Friday. “We timed the tides right and the wind was a positive factor at the end,” she said. The sun was shining at 6:42 a.m. when Debbie hit ~ the water at Cates Beach, and fair = weather continued throughout the day. “There was one point I felt sick, but that passed, then when we got in the home stretch I felt a fot stronger again,” she said. “I thought I would feel a lot more excited (than I did). It was more a calm sense of satisfaction.” Sewell’s Marina donated the use of two boats, and Shane, their 14-year-old son Stephen and family friend Blair MacLean crewed the pilot boat. Debbie Collins, age 38, made history last Friday as the first women to swim arcund Bowen ftsland. rules, Debbie did the swim without a wetsuit and not once touched the pilot beat. “Sewell’s was fantastic,” said Shane. “As was Bay Moorings restaurant.” The Horseshoe Bay eatery supplied food for the crew during the day-long swim, including Greek Salad and sandwiches. As for Debbie, she sustained her strength with half-hour feedings of warm tomato soup, a sports drink, water and a Jirtle coffee. In xotal she consumed five litres of liquids. “You rely torally on your crew,” Debbie said. “After halfway through, all you can think about is the boat.” Debbie attempted to swim www.dnv.org the English Channel fast sum- mer, but was pulled from choppy seas halfway across the 32-kilometre route. Buoyed by her success fast Friday, she has her goggle sights set firmly on returning to the Channel next summer.
