The San Francisco-based clothing chain will open a 5,000-square-foor boutique in the shopping centre's north mall next Friday. The store is the retailer’s 10th in Canada, its third in the Vancouver area. Banana Republic is a divi- sion of Gap Inc. Founded in 1978 by Californians Mel and Patricia Ziegler, the Banana Republic concept arose trom the discovery of a British Burma jacket in a milirary sup- ply shop in Sidney, Australia. The Zieglers discovered there was a market for natural- fibre utilitarian clothing during this era of polyester, The design of the original Banana Republic stor appealed to “8Qs-cra_ yuppies who had dreams of adventure travel. Stores were designed on a safan theme, with bush planes suspended from ceilings and thatehed-roof huts on the dis- play floors. In the *90s, the stores replaced their “urban outback” image with a cleaner, more modern look. At the Park Royal Banana Republic, customers can expect to find a ccuplete selection of women’s merchandise, includ- ing clothing, accessories, shoes, intimates and persenal-care products.
