UPPER Capilano and

Cleveland Dama are fic-
ing anywhere from. two
to four years of con-
struction in their neigh-
‘ borhood.,

Two different projecis are
involved, one of them coming
asa complete surprise to some
members of North Vancouver
Districe Council Monday,

New ozone disinfection
and corrosion control water
treatment facilities were antic:
ipated for the dam following
lengthy public debate and
Greater Vancouver Regional
District (GVRD) — board

approval in November of
ozonation as a primary disin-

fectant instead of chlorine.

cil Monday they brought
news of remedial work needed
to control water seepage
through the east abutment of
Cleveland Dam,

The dam, which supplies
40% of the region’s. drinking

water, was built in the 1950s,

Measures were taken at the
time to control water leaking
from the reservoir through
the sall an the east aburment
but Neden and Huber said
seepage has increased over
time and must be controlled,

dams and it costs sigtificantly
less.”

of soil that needs to be moved

because the region needs
Capilano water during the
summer months, requiring
increased water levels and lim-
ited construction June to
August.

No information was pro-
vided to council on how or if
soil works would translate into
truck loads of dirt up and
down Capilano Road,

presentation to council was
the concrete wall option and
whether that would take as

the relative impact on the
neighborhood would be of
cement deliveries,

Certainly Robin Dixen,
manager of the Capilano
Hatchery just downstream of

the dam, believes both
aptions are still on the table,

Dixon was reluctant to
comment un the potential
impact on the hatchery of the
planued construction until a
choice in methodology has
been made,

He tald the News he was
pleased the hitchery's needs
pad been included in an envi-
ronmental impact study and
noted that whatever option
was chosen would) have to
meet Department of Fisheries
and Oceans habitat guidelines
for the river.

But Dixon did say “there's
4 lot of impact in the blanket
uption,

“The blanket option is a
potential concern because of
siltation. IF the quality of the
water is dirty, it will affect the
hatchery's water supply.”

Dixon also revealed that
successful seepage control will
also“ radically” affect the
area’s groundwater table —
and the hatchery’s tank water
supply,

Meanwhile, users of
Capilano River Regional Park
may want a say in where and
how ozone will be added to
local water,
