Britain ‘and India, | i THE RECENT acquittal of Guy Paul Morin, the Ontario man wrongly convicted of the murder oof nine-year-old Christine Jessop. has fueled discussion on DNA evidence und has re-ignited the great Canadian capital punishment debate, The young girl was) brutally killed in 1984. With the communt- ty up in arms and demanding results, the police arrested and charged a Jessop family neighbor, Guy Morin. : At his first trial in 1986, Morin was acquitted by a jury, The matter was uppealed and a new trial ordered. This trial took. place in 19923. After an eight-day delibera- tion, the jury found Morin guilty of the murder and he was duly sen- tenced to life in prison. Fortunately for.Morin, science has evalved to the point that labo- ratory. technicians were able to compare the DNA from a drop of semen in the murder victim's underwear to a known sample from Morin, The. DNA comparison showed, conclusively, that Morin “was not the killer of Christine Jessop. — DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is often referred to as a genetic fin- gerprint. The plain fact of the matter is that everyone who walks the face of God’s green earth has a separate and specific DNA pattern. No one else, living or dead will have the same pattern. In virtually every rape cise, the suspect leaves behind DNA simples in the fori of semen, The police already seize. any foreign hair or bodily fluid: sam ples from the doctor doing the medical exam of a rape victim. Simply forwarding a sample to a DNA faboratory would provide a DNA analysis which could then be compared to the files held by the RCMP, much in the way they hold fingerprint files. A computer search of those files would, in most . cases, yield the identity of the rapist. A warrant would then be issued to get the offender off the streets.
