Aging population demands independence, says survey RESULTS OF a recent survey show that nearly eight million peo- ple in Canada were age 45 or over -in 1991 — close to one third of the population of this country, said Stephen Mayhew, president of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ . Association (GVHBA). Mayhew said the Statistics Canada survey also revealed that almost three million Canadians are 65 or older —- one third living in _ private houscholds with some form of health or activity limitation.
