This is intended to be the average fuel consumption of all the cars an auto maker sells in Canada in 1992. However, CAA is concerned that the standard is not legislated and cannot be enforced. -Auto makers do not always comply, nor do they always fully report. Legislation has already been passed by the House of Commons and the Senate to mandate the standard, but suc- cessive Federal governments have refused to proclaim the legislation, CAA wants the federal gov- ernment to: @ Proclaim the Motor Vehicle Fuel Consumption Standards Act and mandate the current standard for cars. @ Improve the standard for cars by 10% to 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres by 1997 and by 25% to 6.5 litres by 2002. @ Set an 13.6 litres per 100 kilometre standard for light trucks, improve it by 5% to 11 litres by 1997 and by 15% to 9.9 titres by 2002. e@ Set a fuel consumption stand- ard based on tonne-kilorcetres for heavy trucks and buses and tighten it by 10% by 2002. “Canada is a world leader in promoting energy efficiency and climate stabilization on the world stage,” noted CAA presidem Michael MeNeil. ‘‘This is CAA’s offering of how motorists can contribute to backing those well-meaning words with concrete Currently scheduled BC.
