10 - Sunday, April 26, 1992 - North Shore News Funds approved for local school projects} THE PROVINCIAL government has approved millions of dellars in capital project funding for school districts in North and West Vancouver and Howe Sound. ‘The North Vancouver District 44 School received $2,499,746, $1,089,746 of which has been earmarked for the construction of four additional classrooms for Dorothy Lynas Elementary school, which is ex- pected to increase capacity by 100 students. In addition, $925,000 will be used to renovate Queen Mary- Elementary school. The modifica- tions will include upgrading the school to address safety concerns. Funding of $50,000 is also being provided to undertake seismic assessments at several schools in the district. Education Minister Anita Board (NVSB) has . By Surj Rattan News Reporter Hagen said the running track at Handsworth Secondary schoot will also be upgraded to a modern, all-weather facility in cooperation with the local community and North Vancouver District. The education ministry will ‘spend $280,000 to complete the running track upgrade with a matching amount being provided by the district and local communi- ty organizations. A further $50,000 will be spent on providing access for disabled people at various schools in District 44. ' North Vancouver-Lonsdale NDP MLA. David Schreck said he was happy te see the provincial government put money into District 44 school capital projects. “These (Dorothy Lynas expan- sion, Queen Mary renovations and Handsworth running track) have been three of the hottest items in the district.”” District 44 has been forced to cut $10 million from its 1992-93 budget because of reduced fund- ing from the education ministry. The cuts will result in the loss of District 44 programs and staff. But the funding announced for the district this week from Vic- toria can only be used for capital projects and cannot go towards maintaining programs and staff. West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Jeremy Dalton, the Liberal education critic, said he was hap- py to see the education ministry release the funds for capital pro- jects, but he added that he hoped extra. money would have been made available to help offset District 44’s deficit. “We're certainly pleased that some of these programs can go ahead but it’s not going to take care of the deficit,’ said Dalton. “It’s disappointing that there is not any emergency funding avail- able for the deficit. It’s an on- going problem.” District 44 superintendent Dr. Robin Brayne said work on the announced capital Projects would begin immediately. “The board is. very - pleased, especially with the money for the Dorothy Lynas.expansion and ‘the | Handsworth running track. We're also pleased with the funding for Larson Elementary, and-we can . now begin to remove some of - those portables which ‘have.’ become an eyesore,” said Brayne. Meanwhile, the’ West Vancouver District 45 School Board (WVSB) has received: $&,167,371 in ‘capitai project funding. for the. 992-93 school year. .
