Fifth and Commercial. Go to
Fourth, turn right and go about
three blocks. Look left and you'll
see a big blue building right on
the dock.

The lunch I ordered was simply
‘wonderful — a cup of their
famous Seafood Gumbo (Cajun
chowder) .and a Hot Seafood
Salad. Ili save the description for
the food pages! Brian had “the
best clam chowder I’ve ever
eaten.”” Need I say more?

Prices moderate, service great.
Opens at noon for lunch, five for
dinner.

Another recommendation: La
Petite. Alas, we couldn’t stay an
extra day or we'd have diz:ed here.

it’s part of a motel, The
Islands, and be quick when you
turn off the highway (#20) into
Anacortes. It’s the first block to
your right and easy to miss. The
cuisine is Dutch — but don't let
that fool you. For overall ex-
cellence in continental cuisine, the
Netherlands have the rest of
Europe beaten.

They feature six entrees each
night, and these are changed to
take advantage of the absolute
best available fresh ingredients.
It’s pricey — approximately $14-
$18 range — but all I heard about
La Petite was raves.

Next time we head south, I’m
going to phone from here for res-
ervations — La Petite is just that,
and with its reputation, a week

ahead is probably wise. They are

only open for dinner.

La Conner and Anacortes are
about 20 minutes apart. Driving
time to La Conner from North
Vancouver, including rush hour
traffic, is about two hours, 15
minutes.

their popular circle tours, on
Sunday, April 5.

The day-long excursion by fer-
ries, train and motor coach com-
bines the best of British Colum-
bia’s coastal and island scenery.

Departure. is from Vancouver's
VIA Rail station (near Main Street
and SkyTrain station) at 7:55 a.m.
by bus to Horseshoe Bay and
ferry to Nanaimo, where the nor-
thbound train to Courtenay is
boarded.

A 25-minute stop for junch (in-,
‘cluded in fare) is provided and
then the railcars proceed south
over the ‘‘Malahat’’ into Victoria.
