By Barbara Black News Reporter On March 18, Cap Theatre of Capilano College opens its 1992 theatre season with the Shakespeare classic dressed up for the 90s. “it's a West Coast updated version,” says Bill Murdoch, con- venor of Capilano College's theatre department. Murdoch says the script) has been edited down and ‘‘con- temporized” for this production, which features a 25-student cast. The script has been interpreted by Steven Atkins, a voice instruc- tor at the college, whe is also ac- tive in theatre and is currently touring with Greenthumb Players. ““What he’s done is, instead of the first scene happening at Athens with the Duke, he set it in a col- lege where the Dean has a new bride and is about to celebrate his wedding. Meanwhile the students are giving him a hard time, so they're sent off to the forest.” Other innovations include Ca- nadianisms, eh?, and Newfie and French Canadian characters, Mur- doch relates. This year, the production is be- ing launched in conjunction with studio arts at the college. “We've been organized with clay and textiles, graphic design and music. So students working in studio art are in fact helping in the production,’ says Murdoch, One student is getting credit for designing the set and lighting, and second-year textiles students are custom printing the fabric for the fairies’ capes. Second-year graphic design had a competition jor the design of the Poster. This cooperative approach is a new focus for the visual and per- forming arts at Capilano College. Original music for the show is by lan Schildt, who has composed a digital soundtrack of songs and in- cidental music. “It’s on our computer pro- gram,” Murdoch explains, ‘‘so our Mac just fires it out. We're rehearsing to it already.” Directed by Cap theatre instruc- tor Dawn Moore, A Midsurnmer Night's Dream includes about 15 students from Theatre 201 as well as first-year students who ‘play rocks and fairies,’ says Murdoch. The fairies won't all be of the Victorian fluffy variety. Murdoch says Moore wants the fairies to be older, more contemporary. “The play taps into the kind of spirits around here, on the West Coast.’ The fairies’ costumes will incor- porate body painting. Tickets for the play, which runs March 18-28, can be purchased at the college cafeteria, the Humanities department, or at Cap Corner Store, or reserved by call- ing 984-172 Admission is $9-$12 adults, $7 students and $5 for children. There will be two Friday mati- nees on March 20 and 27 at 1:00 p.m. For further 984-1720. information call " 106¥ Marine Dr., " THEATRICAL MAKE-UP AND. DANCE SUPPLIES Agents for !.° 0. + . .
