Police crack down
on speeders

IF YOU’RE planning to hit the open road one more time
this summer, you should know that a major speeding en-
forcement campaign will be under way across B.C. right
through the Labour Day weekend.

THE BRITISH Columbia Automobile Association
alerts that this summer a family of four, vacationing
by car in Canada, should expect to spend an average
of $220 daily for food, lodging and driving.

“Vacation costs obvicusly depend on a family’s
preference and budget,’’ says BCAA public affairs
manager, Leigh Carter, ‘‘but higher costs can be ex-
pected during popular travel periods and near large
metropolitan areas.”’

Prior to leaving on vacation families should set a
budget.

BCAA says a family of four can expect to spend
an average of $84.10 a day for lodging and $95.40 a
day for meals. Families should note that there are
regional differences in lodging and food costs; the
province of Quebec has the highest average cost and
Saskaichewan, the lowest.

For a mid-size car with an automatic transmission
driven 24,000 kilcmetres a year, families can expect
to pay $8.15 for each 100 kilometres driven. This
figure is based on the soon-to-be-released 1990-1991
CAA publication CAA Car Costs.

The police will be out in force
with cruisers, regular traffic radar
and the radar camera to try to
drive home the point that speed
kills.

The campaign runs from
August 25 to September ? and the
theme says it all: Sooner or Later,
Speeding Catches Up With You.

Last year, speeding contributed
to more than 17 per cent of all
accidents involving injurics or
death in B.C. The insurance costs
alone topped $110 million while
the suffering was immeasurable.

While the speeder we love to
hate is the motorist hell-bent to
pass everything else on the road,
someone who just isn’t paying at-
tention to their driving is just as
dangerous. When you _ speed,
you're leaving yourself less time to
react in an emergency situation.

Given the congestion caused by
holiday traffic, even on the so-
called ‘‘open’’ road, a good driver
has to be ready for anything,
anytime.

A 1984 study of B.C. motorists
at fault in property damage and
injury accidents revealed some-
thing interesting. When comparing
the driving records of the group
causing accidents with the rest of
the driver population, Dr. Bill
Mercer, Director of B.C.’s
CounterAttack Program, found
the group who caused property
damsage accidents had 23 times the

number of speeding convictions.

These at fault in injury-related
crashes had 37 times as many.

One can only hope that the
police will be in the right place at
the right time during the campaign
to catch those deliberately
specding. The rest of us can avoid
a ticket, or worse, by allowing
enough travel time to make our
destinations at a comfortable,
legal speed.

Paying attention and taking resi
stops will help avoid the onset of
‘lead foot.”*

Don’t be bullied into speeding.
If you have some maniac stuck to
your back bumper, pull over and
let them pass.

If you feel they are a real
menace, note the plate number
and call the police.

Of course, it should go without
saying that the Sea-to-Sky High-
way will be one of the more
closely-monitored roads during the
upcoming enforcement campaign.
