¢ SCOTT FLETCHER picks up the phone in mid-interview and places a quick call to the Town Pump’s booking agent. “You're seeing us in action managing ourselves,” he says with a grin. Fletcher and members of North Vancouver's Memory Day don’t have a manager, a promoter or a record label, But their lack of management hasn't stopped the band from implanting its name in- to as many memories as possible. “We'te very conscious of promoting ourselves. We try to devote quality time to that,” says Fletcher, Memory Day's bass guitarist. One of the band's first public relations stunts involved members plastering home-made posters on walls around Vancouver. The posters posed the question: “When is Memory Day?”’ The four words started people wondering just who, what or when Memory Day was. “We did it when we were rela- tively unknown and we were very mysterious about it,’’ Fletcher recalls. ‘It was a good way to promote interest in the band.” EVELYN JACOB feature writer Just over a year later, the North Vancouver band hasn't topped the record charts, but Memory Day has earned an impressive word- of-mouth reputation for writing quality songs and giving quality performances in reputable venues around town, including a recent major Christmas benefit. Forging into folkadelic § out, Memory Day hopes to catch the eye of a record label — but members say they are unwilling to compromise their music to get it. “We're very conscious of how we progress,”’ says guitarist Lanny Hussey. “We don''t play any covers.” Fletcher, who formerly played with Retinal Circus, met Memory Day drummer Todd Oliver at Hillside School in West Van- couver.
