Dear Editor: In a recent edition of North Shore News there were some letters with complaints regarding the ban on outdoor burning. Last April | criticized Mayor Marilyn Baker for not introducing the ban cn open burning sooner. The district council and the Engineering department had four years to study and prepare the public for the ban on the burning of the garden refuse. Trees, branches and garden ref- use should not be burned because the amount of smoke produced by such burning is enormous and is not healthy for. anybody. The groups of pevole that are specially affected by the smoke are young children, old people, people allergic to smoke, people suffering from lung diseases and particularly people who have emphysema and require the daily use of oxygen. Mayor Baker and the council have received numerous — fetters supporting the ban on burning in- troduced in 1982: the letters were fram the B.C, Lung Association, the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Health, There were also petitions to stop burning from people directly af- fected by smoke, people who suf- fer from asthma, allergies and chronic bronchial diseases. There is no other province or ci- ty in Canada where open burning of trees is allowed. Almost 20 years ago all the cities across Canada recognized the cf- fect of residestial air pollution as a factor in public health.
