North Vancouver woman
addresses concerns about
pregnancy and childpirth

JOANNE KATES doesn’t consider herself a superwoman,
but the North Vancouver mother of two single-handedly
organized an extensive two-day childbirth workshop.

The workshop, which — takes
place March 1S and 22, will ad-
dress women’s concerns on
pregnancy — before, during and
after term.

“There really hasn't been
anything like this done before on
the North Shore,’' says Kates.
“tm super excited about it. H's an
important arca for a lot of peo-
ple.’

Kites has heen organizing the
upcoming information event for
the past two months.

As founder of Fitness Dynamics,
classes specializing in exercise for
pregnant women, Kates will also
give wo of the workshops and
lead the exercise breaks.

She will give one seminar on ex-
ercise in pregnancy, and another
on teaching mothers and fathers
exercises they can do with their
baby.

On the first workshop day,
which will be held from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m., the focus will be on pre-natal
concerns.

On the second workshop day,
from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the
focus will be on the family unit.

The cost for both days is $35, or
$25 for one day only.

Speakers will include Yvonne
Leversage, director of pre-natal
classes at the North Shore Health
Unit; obstetrician Dr. David
Thomas; nurse and midwife Ann
Barkham; Dr. Marlene Hunter,
who works in the field of self-
hypnosis; physiotherapist Vicki
Noros; psychologist Jessica
Easton; representatives from Van-
couver’s Post-Partum Support
group; Marilyn Cleven of the
North Shore La Leche League;
dietician Sandra Lopez: CPR in-
structor Liz) Bonner; Dianne
Mecher from North Shore Family
Services; and Kids at Play colum-
nist Pat Gallaher,

Each workshop will be approx-
imately 45 minutes in length.

On March 15 a fashion show by
Shirley K. Maternity and Trendset-
ters will be held.

The workshops will be held at
Highlands United Church in North
Vancouver. To pre-register call
929-1953. People must pre-register
to be provided with free bavy-
sitting services,
