Fire hits marina

THE RACE Rock Yacht Services building in West Van-
couver was extensively damaged by fire on Tuesday,
April 6.

The West Vancouver Fire Department responded to
§908 Marine Dr, at 11:30 p.m.

The fire was brought under control within approxi-
mately 30 minutes, but the commercial building’s roof
was burned off at its east end. The northeast corner of
the building was severely damaged. There was also ex-
tensive electrical damage to the structure.

Although no one was hurt in the fire, several exotic
birds housed in the building were killed.

The birds were among personal belongings stored in a
spare room by the daughter of one of the building occu-
pants, said a West Vancouver Fire Department
spokesman.

The marine services building contained fibreglass and
paint buckets. The fibreglass and paint caused minor
explosions os eight firefighters from Horseshoe Bay,
Caulfeild and Fump Station Five in West Vancouver
fought the blaze.

The fire started in a room where kayaks and wind-
surfers were bullt.

Fire officials ase investigating the cause of the fire.

Yo press time, the source of the Nre had not been
determined.

Hydro crews were on th: scene on Wednesday at-
tempting (o hook up power for several boats on land for
repairs and maintenance.
