Spartans senior girls volleyball team took the silver medal in the B.C. ‘*AA’'’ High School Volleyball Championships at UBC. Sentinel, representing the ‘North Shore Zone, started slowly in the final dropping the first two games against Port Alberni 10-15, 3-15. They came back to win 15-13 in the third game, only to fall behind 0-10 and 4-13 in the fourth game. They eve .- tually lost 11-15. ‘The Spartans began the tournament at a torrid pace, ~ scoring straight set victories “over Winston Churchill 15-9, 15-11, Centennial 15-12, “15.13 and Chilliwack 15-4. 15-13. . ‘Against Nelson's L.V, . Rogers, . ranked fourth in B.C., the Spartans rallied - “. from. a one-game deficit to ~ win’ 15-17, 15-5, 15-J1, and » ;/ended the. first day’s play ‘.- Sporting an unbeaten 4-0 re- “cord. On Friday, the team ran .-into. a red-hot Port Alberni team and lost 9-15, 7-15. Still licking the wounds in- flicted in that defeat, Sen- tinel then dropped a match to Penticton 12-15, 4-15, In Friday’s last match, the Spartans recovered to crush Vancouver Tech 15-5, 15-5. The victory left Sen- tinel with a 5-2 record in round robin play and a second-place finish in their eight-team pool. The top four teams in each pool then advanced in- to Saturday’s quarter final round. Sentinel handily dispatch- ed Burnaby South 15-11, 15-6, then ran into B.C.'s number one ranked team John Oliver in the semi- finals. In by far the most exciting match of the tournament, John Oliver won the first game 15-9. The Spartans came. back in the second posting a 15-7 victory. John Oliver, on the strength of its serving, went ahead 14-7 in the thizd game. Faced with elimination, Sentinel dug in and began the long csin- eback. With . excellent blocking and some incredible defen- sive plays, the Spartans fought back to a 16-14 vic- tory. The win placed them in the final against Port Alber- ni. Throughout the tourna- ment Sentinel displayed a well-balanced team with all players making major con- tributions. Three players were award- ed all-star recognition. Sarah Pike was named to the first all-star team. Elaine Wai and Sara McGladdery were named to the second all-star team. By winning the silver medal, the West Vancouver school became the first North Shore school ever to win a medal in the B.C. “AA” Championships. Also, Sentinel became the highest placing Single ‘‘A’”’ school in the history of the B.C. ‘AA’? Championships.
