A NORTH Vancouver contractor figures making a living is hard enough, without having some of his business disappearing from under his custom- ers’ noses. By MARK HAMILTON Fred Ammann, a North Vancouver roof spraying contractor, says he is frustrated by a string of events that have seen his estimates for jobs either altered or removed from cus- tomers’ homes. He suspects that the five incidents he is aware of may be indicative that there have been many more. According to Ammann, the problem first came to his attenuon in April, when he inadvertently discovered that he had lost out on a roof- spraying contract because a potential customer consid- ered his estimate for the job ‘*extremely high.”’ When Ammann visited the woman and checked the estimate he had left behind, he was startled to see a fig- ure of $685. His estimate had been for $185 but the figure on the sheet he had left with the woman had been written over several times and the ‘‘1’’ changed toa ‘‘6"’. Ammann took the altered estimate to West Vancouver Police but found they could do little about the change. He contacted the News at that time and said he could recall four or five other incidents where customers had turned down his estimates because they were too high. To see if there was more to the situation Ammann, in the course of one May morn- ing, left estimates at the res- idences of a number of North Vancouver friends and acquaintances. In four of those cases, the homeowners or tenants in- volved saw the estimates be- ing removed from mailboxes and mail slots. Ammann says he is sure he knows who is removing the estimates and suspects the same tndividual was in volved in altering the estimate that) originally prompted his suspicions After that May day, he again visited police but was told) prosecuuion would be hampered by the difficulty of proving in court that the estimates have an intrinsn value Ammann has gone public with his complaints in hopes that the publity wall stop the incidents he beheses are costing him money 2ar Student (esr so" C ubtoe Soe homme. anos Bullets & Mutlehes Tabics & ( Maws Stools One nt woOb WAALS wl NSO (aA SIN 40) eawy Al7 - Sunday, July 29, 1984 - North Shore News CLEARANCE TO 50% — ON FINE HOME FURNISHINGS SOFAS LOVE SEATS SECTIONALS SOFA BEDS RECLINERS DINING ROOM ~ BEDROOM ACCESSORIES FURNITURE GALLERY LTD.
