B2 - Sunday, November 13, 1983 - North Shore News Crowded at the top THE THREE top teams scored victories and remained ughtly knotted in the race for first place in North Shore Senior Hockey action on the weekend. John Payne scored his 9th and 10th goal of the season to lead the Canadians past the stubborn Firefighters 5-1. Other scorers for Canadians were Jim Tapp, Don Ehl, and Mel Melnechenko, all from close-in passing piays around the Firefighters net. Bill Mc- Quay notched the _ Fire- fighters only goal on a pretty solo effort off a faceoff. The Drillers pumped in six goals in eleven minutes of the first period as they complete- ly outclassed the Warriors. Larry Brown led the attack, breaking out of scoring slump with two goals and an assist. Mike Berner replaced Vern Kaiman in goal for the Warriors at the start of the second period and was spec- tacular in holding off the continued Driller attack, only allowing a goal by Larry Baker, his second of the night, with three seconds left in the game. Larry Braley scored the on- ly Warnior goal in the second period over Keith Gibson’s nght shoulder, on a _ pass from Rod Mammoney, who was stretched out flat on his stomach on the ice. The Old Crows scored ear- ly in the second period when GSL MINOR FOOTBALL Lions hold down first IN A HARD fought game Lynn Valley Lions scored a 13-12 victory over the Spartans. The Lions scored on their first two possessions with full back Merritt Hutchins scor- ing on an end run and flanker Chns Bradford capitalizing on a reverse play. Half back Chris Obeck coverted to Hut- chin’s touchdown and _ that proved to be the game’s win- ning point. Later in the day the Lions played the Jets in a make-up game and came away with their sixth straight’ win beating the Jets 25-12. Leading the scoring was quarterback David Haslam with two touchdowns, Mer- Tritt Hutchins and Chris Obeck with one touchdown each. Lions held the Jets scoreless in the second half with strong defensive play from David Guernsey, Gerald Morin and = Josh Supic.
