Like the myths and legends surrounding the opening night par- iy for Pasparos Taverna back in 1974, and the number of chopped off ties hanging from the ceiling of Kypriaki or how the Great Greek got his name or how sabre dances Xen leasned his dancing chops. Because north of isth and Lons-. dale, Greek mythology and most other forms of cultural expression pretty much dry up. But times are evolving in the local restaurant and cultura} trade. Mythos (Greek for myth) has opened in an area bereft of good restaurants but loaded with poten- tial and is set to_establish its own iliad of legends, myths and dining sagas. Initially opened in mid-August, Mythos has already filled the im- mediate area with Greek energy and social warmth. As with any good Greek taverna, it draws its clientele with laughter and light. A wall of glass doors opens directly onto the sidewalk, welcoming diners, passersby and shoppers to eat, talk or just observe: © Inside they will find bold colors, robust aromas and a whirl of waiters. Those familiar with Pasparos Taverna will also find Angelo Angelopoulos, a former-Pasparos waiter/manager, and Erodotes - Anayiotos, the taverna’s former head chef. In a quest for more restaurant challenges and to spread the message of Greek cookery, the two set out on their own Odyssey to found a taverna of their own. The effect of their move on Pasparos has yet to be investigated by Table Hopping staff, but its ef- fect on the upper Lonsdale dining scene has been immediate and impressive. Ona recent Friday night, the 80-seat Mythos, former site of a taco shop, was buzzing with cus: tomers and fife. The restaurant offers much to in- terest Greek food fans on its good-sized menu: traditional standbys such as Kalamari, Keftethes, Souvlaki, Spanakopitta and Mousaka, of course, but also many enticing variations and combinations that the restaurant's owners have perhaps filed on mental back pages for the day when they opened their own res- taurant: Black Eye Bean Salad ($3.50); Ontiki (marinated charbroiled quail, $4.95); Kalamari Gemisto Skaras (stuffed charbroiled squid, $6.95); Psaropitta (seafood and cream cheese pie, $3.95); Loukaniko (charbroiled Greek sausage, $5.95); special Mythos Combinations for two ($25.95 to $29.95 for feasts of mousaka, souviakis, kalamari, and seafood) and the grand three-course Mythos Symposium ($18.95). Price range for the restaurant's main entrees: $7 to $15. Mythos also has a medium-sized wine list ($14 to $30) with selec- tions from Greece (a dozen, in- cluding several by the glass) and elsewhere around Europe, Australia, South and North America.
