24 - North Shore News -— Community musters resources a Jan-Christian Sorensen Contributing Writer NORTE Vancouver District council recent- ly heard about a num- ber of youth-violence preventative options available locally. Here are some of the resources: @ the North Vancouver RCMP has a comprehensive School Liaison = Officer (SLO) program currently in place in an effort to combat youth violence in North ‘Vancouver City schools. Four SLOs make regular Wednesday, Apri! 5, 2000 visits to the municipality's 62 schools to talk to students about drugs, alcohol and vio- lence with a focus on educat- ing and helping students to make the right choices. There has been talk recently of appointing anoth- er officer to help spread out the heavy workload of the four SLOs currently in rota- tion — Const. Tom Seaman, Tammy Wright, — Chris Drouin and Mike O’Beirne. @ The North Vancouver Youth Together Against Violence Network ~~ a pro- ject which encourages area high schools and youth agen- cies to send representatives to the Network to learn how BRENTWOOD COLLEGE SCHOOL Vancouver Island, British Columbia 400 students. . BOYS ANP GIRLz: GRADE 8 - 12 to create Youth Action Teams in their schools. @ People Power — a diversi- ty training project which aims to develop a resources manual to train youth and youth counsellors to facili- tate youth groups to address how to better build bridges with people from diverse backgrounds. B Solar Power — A violence prevention manual currently being produced to teach youth and youth workers how to run youth groups and teach violence prevention activities.
