Anna Marie D'Angelo News Reporter dangelo@nsnews.com A patient at Lions Gate Hospital (LGH) died of the flesh-eating disease necrotizing fasciitis last Thursday in the intensive care unit. LGH spokesman Clay Adams confirmed that an elderly woman died of the disease, caused by the Group A streptococcus bacteria, last week. The woman was diagnosed with the infection two weeks ago at LGH. ; ; Adams said the previous necrotizing fasciitis case at LGH occurred in December or January. That patient also died. Statistics available from the B.C, Centre for Disease Control N. Shore counts second reporied case of necrotizing fasciitis (BCCDC) indicate that cight cases of necrotizing fasciitis were reported in B.C. this year — none from the North Shore. According to the BCCDC, the North Shore Health Region in 1998 reported one case of flesh-eating disease caused by Group A streptococcus bacteria. Out of 11 cases reported in the province in 1998, Vancouver reported three cases, Richmond, one and the South Fraser Health Region, two. The provincial government changed the Health Act to require all incidents of the flesh-eating disease to be reported to public health officers. Supreme Court. Dr. Hubert Manning is secking damages from the RCMP, B.C. Ministry of Attorney General, Greater Vancouver Regional District, Grouse Mountain, West Vancouver District, North Vancouver City and North Vancouver District. Manning believes the defendants were negli- gent and caused or contributed to his son’s death. The action was filed Tuesday under the Family Compensation Act. The elder Manning’s wile Stephanie Margarct Manning, daughter Clodagh Mary Geraldine Manning and son Shane Dennis : Manning are also named as Rory’s survivors. ; Manning is being represented by Carol Ross of the Vancouver law firm Hordo, Ross and Bennett. Assistant medical health officer for the South Fraser Health Region Dr. Robert Strang said four of the six cases of necrotiz- ing fasciitis were caused by the Group A Streptococcus bacteria. A Trinity Western University student who contracted the infection in March 1997 died. Strang said the strains of Streptococcus bacteria in three of the four cases were different, indicating that the people had not gotten the infection from each other. He said in the two cases where the bacteria strains were exact- ly the same, the flesh-eating disease appeared four months apart, also making it unlikely that the infection was transferred.
