BugsScan may save that Mac atiack MARK Weston’s shareware application BugScan looks for and eradicates the follow- ing viruses for Mac users wishing to main- tain optimal system health: @ AuroStart 9805 Worm: The destructive AutoStart $805 spreads through disks that contain an_ invisible application file named DB in the root directory. When an infected disk, is iaserted into a Macintosh running Quicktime 2.0 or later, the DB application is launched automatically. There are several AutoStart strains: A to F. The strains can be copied to server volumes, but they do not launch when the vo!- umes are mounted. According to Weston, the best defence against the virus is to de-select the option labelled Enable CD-ROM AutoPlay in the Quicktime settings control panel (Quicktime Version 2.5 and later); Graphics Accelerator ({GAX/SevenDust) Virus: When you run an infected application, Graphics Accelerator will re-install its extension if it finds that the extension has been deleted. If an infected file is run and the extension has been removed (and deleted) before restarting, further infection does not occur. Weston advises that if you’re infected with the Graphics Accelerator virus, and use your Mac between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. on the 6th or’ 12th of the month, the virus will trigger itself and attempt to delete every document on your hard drive; Scores Virus: Scores is also sometimes known as the Eric, Vult, NASA and San Jose Flu virus. Scores infects your sys- tem, note pad and scrapbook system files. It also creates two invisi- _ ble files in your system folder named Scores and Desktop. The desktop file comes with an extra space at the end of its name. Two days after your sys- tem becomes infected, Scores begins to spread to each application you run. The infection occurs between two and three min- utes after you begin the application; @ INIT-M Virus: This one triggers on any Friday the 13th. The virus damages a large number of folders and files. File names are changed to random eight-character strings. Folder names are changed to random onc to eight character strings. The virus infects all kinds of files including extensions, applications, preference files and document files. Find a copy of BugScan at .
