Dear Editor: North Vancouver District Council has approved a $30,000 junket to China; Mayor Don Bell and three councillors are off to enhance economic development opportuni- ties. Two weeks ago, my side of Edgemont Boulevard did not receive garbage collection because the collection day was changed and Capilano College the district failed to notify us. This is the same district shar wants to trot off to China for business reasons. What's wrong with this pic- ture? What is our council doing in Beijing when they seldom do anything right in North Vancouver? Jeremy Dalton North Vancouver Community Music School Guitar =| Kodaly-Orff |. Dear Editor: Re: John Fair’s April 25 letter to the News editor. There are dozens of comraunities in B.C. and hundreds in Canada that have Model Acronautics Associations of Canada safety- approved model flying sites. 1 agree that the reason most residents like the North Shore is the closeness to nature, out in my 70 years of residence here my considered opinion is that population pollution is the major factor in the deterioration of the North Vancouver lifestyle. As far as the headline, “This Sport i is Plane Noisy” may I present some ideas about model aviation. The interest that my friends and [ devel- oped at the aforementioned activity at Boulevard Park inspired us to volunteer for. overseas service in the RCAF during the Second Worla War, from which some did not return to enjoy model building. There is a long history of model flying in this area. Two West. Vancouverites, the Grimaldi brothers, experimented with flying a floac- cauipped model from the waters off Ambleside. They did so in an attempt to emulate the feat of North Van’s Mr. Sid Brown- John, who flew such a medel from Burrard Inlet in the eariy 40s. That model is now in the North Van City museum and archives. Mr. Grimaldi, now in his late 70s, is still active in building "model air- craft. On the positive side of the hobby/sport, my experience as a teacher/sponsor of the Balmoral Balsa Bashers, an extra curricular activity, has led to the Observation thar over the 10 vears of its existence, none of the teenage members ever had to appear in Youth Court. Over the years, a great deal of satisfaction has been gained from seeing the results of the interest in aviation that was developed in the junior high level blossom into a lifetime inter- est or career. Many of this club’s former members are now in the aviation industry as mechanics, pri- vate pilots, commercial pilots, and one is a department of transport helicopter inspector. The patience and perseverance learned’ at the modelling bench are life-long character tuilding attributes that should not be dis- counted. Some communities, such as Delta and Coquitlem, recognize the benefits of this activ- ity by providing space and facilities for flying model aircraft. as far as the noise is concerned at the local - field, there is no running of engines before 10 a.m., after 6 p.m., or on Sundays. All models are equipped with effective muf- flers, which bring them into compliance with a prescribed decibel level, much below the GVRD overall levels. : Much quieter than gas lawn mowers, w! hich are allowed ‘to be run hours. carlier: and later than flying hours allow.
