8 — Sunday, March 23, 1997 — North Shore News Don't rush te Dear Editor: Your recent North Sh Focus and News Special Report, regarding schools scrambling to catch up on computer technology caught my attention. While aptly concerned with equal distribution of technical hardware and on-line services among the North Shore sec- ondary schools, the articles failed to eddress which direc- tion these expensive purchases are steering public education. Are they truly on the path of knowledge? Perhaps you could have questioned whether the cur- rently felt need for technolog- "ical upgrades are justified in the school setting. Certainly J advocate the provision of computer literacy classes to secondary students; it is indeed nearing a funda- mental skill in today’s job mar- ket. It is disturbing enough to have become a hospital patient. ~ Last year I spent, all told, “denied,” world population shall continue to grow more rapidly than society and Earth can sustain. Our continued fight against the natural order of things (death by disease or starvation) results in death by natural dis- fare)..as the only means of “population control.” However, modern technol- ogy and advanced medical sci- ence continues to reduce death these technologies require highly trained users to meet furure demands. Without this expertise our development = might fail behind, and our economy soon after. Without it too our creative abilities with these magic toys, as endorsers of global communication and the general arts, would cease. However, to what degree are these machines needed to fulfill our schools’ inherent onus of education? | applaud those who can readily incorpo- rate these high-tech tools in their teachings — yet will lament should their roles become that of idle supervi- sors. Let us not forget that schools propagate knowledge and wisdom. We needn't rush to get “on-line” with private American education — (as Rockridge middle school now boasts), nor tailor our budgets to supply the latest in available hardware. No computer ser- vice alone will compensate for the essential teacher-student interaction, The school’s primary pur- Pose remains that of teaching. While I support the usage of increased technology as a tool, it should not become the cen- trepiece. | hope school boards keep in mind that computers remain simply a facilitator in the learning process.
