The biggest improvement is in

the powertrain department. Three

» completely new engines are offered:
a-142-horsepower 2.4-litre four-
> eylinder engine in base 2WD regular
cab and Xtracab Tacomas (replacing
‘ the 112 horsepower.2.4-litre unit); a
150-horsepower 2.7-litre four-cylin-
»der engine in 4X4 regular cab and
‘.Xtracab models; and a 190 horse-
power 3.4-litre V6 in Xtracab mod-
els only (replacing the 150-horse-
“power 3.0-litre V6). It’s interesting:
, to note that the new 2.7-litre four-

All three new engines are high-
tech: dual overhead camshafts
replace single overhead cams, all
have four valves per cylinder for bet-
ter engine breathing. and electronic
multi-point fuel injection for ea
starts and smoother operation. The
V6 engine now features direct igni-
tion (replacing the distributor) for
more efficient timing and reduced
maintenance. 1

Fuel consumption on all three

‘engines is good by truck standards,

though not by car standards, The
base 2.4-litre engine achieves a
city/hwy rating of 12,8/9.7 | per 100
km (22/29 m.p.g.); the 3.4-fitre V6
engine gets 13.8/11.41 per 100 km
(20/25 m.p.g.).

Both handling and highway ride

have been improved by replacing the

previous front torsion-bar suspension
with a new frent double wishbone
