aifects us all

IT WAS the first time
Pd had such a request.
The people who attend the
Keep Well gatherings in Deep
‘Cove had asked their program-

mer if I'd come over for lunch

and tell them who I was,
where I came from.:
° A thumb-nail deal, you
understand, they didn’t have -
allday.
Not much call for notes: I
mean, you’ve lived your life,
surely fo goodness you can
recite it, more or less?

Bare bones of born here,
got educated there, worked at
such-and-such; married, multi-
‘plied, aged.

.. What else can you say?

It’s everybody’ 's story. Hap-
# pens all the time.

But in fact it would have
been better with some notes.

journal, but it was about
thoughts and reactions and the
pains of growing up,

It was a substitute compian-
ion, a confidant, in those years
when I lived in the bush and
taught isolated children while |
myself was trying to grow up.

That sort of self-indulgence
doesn’t cui it when what you
need is true autobiography.
You wish for the good old
daily “dear diary.”

Those who keep one,
who've kept one for a long
time, are going to be hailed by
all of us with gratitude.

Because what we were and
how we lived render us
unique, and ail knowledge of

‘ that intimate life will disap-

pear with us unless we leave
some record.

We’ve come through shifts
of behavior, fashion, economic
conditions the like of which
will never be replicated.

We have in our heads an
extraordinary mass of dicta
regarding all sorts of conduct
and duties and manners that no
