Bridge is to .. Vanconver.what the Golden Gate is » to San Francisco. And what better “entrance could there be to the cily of Vancouver:than to sail beneath the Lions Gate Bridge? . -- ‘Not ‘only freighters, pleasure boats, fishing boats, but hundreds -- ~ of passenger ships’ sail beneath it, iWith tourists from all over the “world. * : >>. ‘All have delighted in the grace- ful structure of this bridge. It has indeed become a symbol of the city itself... . jl-would agree with Bayley that a “to contemplate its loss is incon- - “ceivable. To find’a way of keeping’ it. perhaps possible.” And that is -what Bayley and Merrick are “proposing to dovin their Heritage ‘Choice Proposal for the Lions Gate Bridge. ‘ It seems a very sensible solution . “to the crossing problem, ~ .., Heritage consultant Dr. Harold Kalman of Commonwealth Historic - Resource Management states, “The proposal to retain the essence of the” historic Lions Gate Bridge within an expanded new structure is an exciting and legitimate preservation intervention that creatively com- bines heritage conservation with a practical solution to the problem of crossing the First Narrows.” ‘The bridge would become a double-decked: bridge with traffic Moving towards the North Shore on Visttour shop before 3.5, DRAWER DRESSERS, ARMOIRES RIGHT STANDS, BEDS, BURKBEDS, TABLES ; CHAIRS, DESKS, ROLLTOPS, BOOKTASES ssi FREE-STANDING WALL SYSTEMS, CASINETS tyes DANISH BLACK & WHTIE DRESSERS view COMPUTER WORKSTATIONS eA INSTANT FURNISHING 1845 West 4th Avenue. Heading from the North Shore to Vancouver, the lower deck would carry the traffic which would enter a tunnel at the end of the bridge and would take ‘the same route directly under the existing causeway. The bridge would be modern- ‘ized — upgraded and kept open for traffic throughout its construction. When corapleted, traffic flow would be the same as.it is now but without the tie-ups that exist with only the three lanes. The route would not direct more traffic into the West End.-nor expropriate property, nor use park tand. Following are the key elements of the Heritage Design Concept as outlined in the proposal. @ Retention of the heritage struc- ture of the Lions Gate Bridge. 9 Provision of twin inbound/out- bound decks with four public vehi- cle lanes and two transit/high occu- pancy vehicle lanes. * Provision of the dedicated “passing” cyclist lanes and two pedestrian walkways. @ Provision of uni-directional causeway/tunnel within the existing Stanley Park alignment and present right-of-way width. f@ Protection and enhancement of — the present Park Drive experience through fimitations on truck access. the advocacy of non-arterial road- way standards and the restoration of the historical character: #1 No land acquisitions or expro- priations that impact aatural planti- ng.
