Well, I think. August has the
most interesting long weekend this
year.

[I'd imagine Vancouver
firefighters Doug and Mike, of
August, would likely agree.

Then of course, there’s Brad in

November...

For seven years, the Greater
Vancouver . Firefighters Hall of
Flame calendar has been abie to
turn gumbooted men in oversized
patched pants into sex objects.

‘This: year’s issue is not some-
thing that needs to be kept in a

drawer, although the. symbolism is
there for all to figure out.

Daryi Chvala, said the new calen-
dar has a bit more beefcake than
the 1993 edition, which was criti-
cized. for being too guy-next-
doorish. ~

to women. That’s' who buy the
calendar.’’

Vancouver fireboat?

“| know, but we have mutual
aid,’’ said Chvala, who is six feet
(1.8 metres) tall and weighs 180
pounds (82 kilograms).

He lives in the Norgate area.

Chvala figures he was one of
the chosen 14 out of 60 -guys who
voiunteered this year because of
his somewhat different look.

He is 45, bald and in shape.

Sources say all three. of those
attributes don’t usually happen at
the same time. ‘

Chvala said he shaves his head

at least once every day and works

out daily with light weights.

_Chvala, who also has a com-
mercial helicopter pilot licence,
says. he has had to endure mer-
ciless kidding about being. Mr.
June from: fellow _NVDFS
workers.

NVDFS public education officer
Terry Abrams told the News he
was glad Chvala was in the calen-
dar for the sake of all bald men in
the world.

.Chvala pointed out that younger
guys in the department have been
turned down for a spot in’ the

calendar. .

According to the Vancouver
Firefighters Union Local - 18,
which organizes the calendar, the
men chosen are representative of
men who make up Greater: Van-«
couver fire departments.

Chvala,: a 21-year veteran of
NYVDFS, said posing for the cal-
endar partly appealed to him
because proceeds go. to good
causes.

And Chvala laughingly admits,
“it’s the “90s. If. you’ve got it,
flaunt it. Don’t you think?”

According to the calendar’s
sponsor, 30 women aged 17.io 80

The calendar has raised more than
$500,000 over the years.
