Police said the deception works the following way: The man came into the store and tried to buy a pack of cigarettes with a $50 bill. by quick-chan The clerk took the $50, gave the man his change and -the man then said he would like to pay for the cigarettes with money from the change and receive his $50 back. The clerk took the $1 and gave the man his $50 back. The man then said he had another $50 and that he Store clerk hoodwinked ing artist. would give the clerk two $50's in exchange for five $20 bills. The clerk did this and the man escaped having defrauded the clerk of $50. The police spokesman said the man tried this in another store but the clerk caught on and he didn’t get any money. The spokesman said the man was “very fast talking” and the deception takes place in less than a minute. He warns thal when store clerks are very busy and there are lineups such as occur at this time of year they may be susceptible to this kind of fraud. W. Van braces for emergencies West Vancouver § is preparing to cope with emergencies--of whatever kind. The announcement was made at the inaugural meeting of the 1981 West Van council by Mayor Derrick Humphreys. “With the understanding that emergencies of various kinds can strike when and where least expected,” he said, “I will be inviting the ratepayer association representatives to join with me in considering the setting up of a voluntary emergency warden system throughout our municipality.” Humphreys explained that he had in mind “coverage by designated responsible individuals available in the case of disaster as auxilianes to our permanent forces”. In line’ with overall emergency planning measures West Van fire prevention officers carried out a complete inspection of the municipalities apartment areas earlier this fall.
