IF ANY home on the North
Shore with all of its heritage
and historical background
deserves to be locking for-
ward to a happy new year,
this one certainly does.

On a hot summer evening two
years ago the Thomas Nye House,
a centerpiece of the North Lons-
dale area, caught fire and the top
storey was destroyed.

The roof line was retained,
though, and it has taken consid-
crable time, effort and money to
restore this stately old home.

Thomas S. Nye made his for-
tune by subdividing (District Lot
2026) a military grant awarded (o
him for service, when he’ returned
(as a veteran from the Boer War in
1902.

His first iiome was built at
Lonsdale and East Queens, but in

1912 he went all out for himself -

and his wife Emily with the build-
ing of this large home higher up
Lonsdale.

It was constructed in the Tudor
Revival style of an English man-
sion, complete with tall chimneys,
windows with leaded panes, and
Norman arches. .

Harry Blackadder, a well-
known architect and one of Nye’s

neighbors, designed this home and’:

four other architects were cori-
sulted as well, on both the exter-
nal and internal design.

The house, with- + total living
area of 6,000 square feet, has five
bedrooms — all with views -— five
bathrooms and five fireplaces.

Unfortunately Thomas Nye
went broke building this imposing
home, which has since been local-
ly called ‘‘Nye’s Foily,’? and in
1915 he bought a ranch at Daisy
Lake 22 miles north of Squamish
on the PGE line, and his house
was offered for sale.
