Car alarm hoodwinks thieves A WEST Vancouver woman is doing alarmingly well with a new business, thanks to young vandals with an appetite for car hood emblems. Helena Konasewich is president of Echoes Network. She set up the company two years ago after she bought a new Mercedes and began to worry about losing her hood emblem to thieves. . Said Konasewich, “My office is half a block from a school. i had a new Mercedes and my husbard ".. “had an old Mercedes: his emblem was stolen twice.” - While attending a conference in _ the United States she called a ‘Mercedes dealership and asked for an alarm’ system to protect the coveted emblem. She bought a kit. “I put it on my car and ‘everybody started asking me about it. The kids couldn’t steal it and I started getting kits for people,” she said. At the car show last year, she Michael! Becker HiGH TECH set up a booth to feature the Pro-Tek hogd emblem alarm. ‘‘People were super curious about it. The kids all knew what it was for. The adults all asked me, “What is this?’ ’’ She -has since secured Canada-wide representation for the product, which is available now through retail outlets. The alarm system works simply. ‘*When the thief tries to pull tire emblem, a circuit closes. This little gizmo hooks up under the hood. Any car that has at least a two- inch clearance under the hood and a movable emblem can be fitted. “When the emblem is puiled, the horn starts to honk. Once they stop pulling on it, it stops honk- ing. The kids do not expect this, so it is quite a shock,’’ Konasewich said. When moving through a car wash, Konasewich claims the hood ornament pops back toward the hood without activating the alarm. Said Konasewich, ‘‘The kids make necklaces and belts... Those who .are more successful make belts — that takes an awful lot of cars to rob. Other kids make key chains. The police raid schools and come up with tons of them. The main thieves are the 13-, 14-, 15-year-olds.** To contact Echoes Network cal} 921- 8924. ‘Course to tour British Virgin Islands NORTH SHORE Continuing Education and Sail-Train Interna- tional, for the fourth consecutive year, are offering a 10-day sail training tour of the British Virgin Islands this spring and fall. “Our video and lecture will capture your imagination of what . it is like to cruise exotic tropical _islands aboard a luxurious yacht, while learning to sail,"’ says Mar- cus Kerry, tour leader and ad- EXPECT EXCELLENCE MARYLIN TOWARD | offer experience, en- thusiasm, and ability proven by a consistently successful sales record.
