The Clachan

THIS WELL-known ocean front
dining establishment is located in
West Vancouver’s Dundarave
Park: Its location commands one
of the most spectacular views in
the Lower Mainland.

- Built by the Stevenson family in
1912, the structure was called
“Clachan,” the Scottish Highland
name for village, or cluster of
buildings.

It was one of a group of build-
ings and was operated as a tea-
room by Helen and Jessie. Steven-
son.

There was another long building
with several units in it that were
used for overnight accommoda-

‘tion, that ran north to south
against the eastern boundary of
‘the property. :
~ In 1914, the construction of the
second floor above the tea-room
allowed for further overnight
guests. :

““The Clachan’’ provided a
gathering place for the Scottish
society, ratepayers groups and po-
litical meetings.

Around 1917, swim meets were
held on the waterfront.

A pier was built and wooden
bleachers were set up on it for
spectators to view the swimming
and diving events.

Following the meet, the veranda
of “The Ciachan"’ was used for
awards ceremonies and cups were

* given to the winners.

Always operated as a restau-
rant, it was called ‘‘The Breakers”’
during the 1950s and then ‘‘Saint
Mawes’’, named after Saint
Mawes, Cornwall, in England.

The municipality purchased the
property and continued :o lease
the building for restaurant use.

In the mid-1970s it became
Dundarave Park.
