MAILBOX Mom questions board's reasoning Dear Editor: ] am writing as the mother of a kindergarten student at Ridgeview School to express my opposition to the proposal which calls for the move of current Ridgeview School kindergarten students as well as prospective P-1 students to Hollyburn School. The ‘‘new’’ Hollyburn English stream students would be children who reside within newly devised boundaries (school board policy has dictated that no boundaries should exist within the school district), Exceptions to the move would be students who have one or more older siblings enrolled at Ridgeview. The students who would be ask- ed to move from Ridgeview to Hollyburn (currently a French Immersion school) will comprise a small isolated group, primarily firstborns who are not in need of such special programs as ESL and SLD. The classroom setting suggested will not provide the diversity of Mailbox policy WHEN SENDING a letter to the editor, be sure to include your name, written legibly, your full address and your telephone number. Facilities such as the library and computer room for such a small group of English stream students are unlikely to offer the variety found in larger schools. i have concerns about how well the upcoming ungraded primary system will function in a school that consists of only two or three English stream classrooms. In addition, it is unknown at this point whether the move to Hollyburn would be temporary or permanent. This is a crucial issue to resolve as it affects the attitude of school board staff, the students, and their parents. fam prepared to accept the fact that some students must move. However, I can only support a move to a ‘‘complete’’ school rather than to the two to three room phasing-in situation, with all of its limitations, which would ex- ist at Hollyburn under the current proposal. The proposal also calls for the sale of schools in West Vancouver to raise funds for renovations. If the school population of West Van increased, thereby necessitating another school, what position would the schoo! board be in to purchase a site, let alone build a school? Constance E.
