Sunday is the 20th anniversary of Earth Day 1970, which was responsible for the birth of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air Act in the U.S.A. This year, environmen- talists around the world will again be joining forces to show that we are committed to creating for ourselves a future that is healthy, vibrant and life-sustaining. ‘ Whether or not you plan to at- . tend the events listed below, Earth Day provides all of us with an op- portunity to re-think our personal commitment 10 the well-being of the planet. Perhaps, for you, Sunday will be the day you pledge to start recycl- ing your newspapers. Or take the bus to work. Or stop using disposable diapers. While we coutd all be doing more to help the world, there is no such thing as a ‘‘small’’ contribu- tion to the environment move- ment. Each step you take is an im- portant one, and there is no step more important than the first. There is strength in numbers, so 1 encourage you to make your commitment a public one. The fol- lowing are some of the Earth Day events happening in the Vancouver area: WALK FOR THE WORLD The annual Peace Walk has been converted to the Walk for Peace and Planetary Survival, which will take place on Saturday, tomorrow, ‘ starting at noon at Kitsiiano ‘ Beach. . If you purchase a $2 Earth Day 1990 button, available at various shops and at all VanCity Savings. Credit Unions (1290 Marine Dr., North Van), you can ride the buses for free from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The walk is expected to attract between 50,000 and 90,000 people, and will culminate in an Earth Day festival at Sunset Beach, starting at approximately 1:15 p.m. Entertainers on stage will in- . clude the African Heritage Drum- ‘ mers, Ann Mortifee, Holly Arn- zten and folk singer Stephen Fear- ing. Call 736-0321 for more information. EARTH DAY 1990 A number of events will occur on Earth Day proper as well. One that sounds particularly fun for the whole family is the first-ever Pacific Spirit Eco-Fair at the Pacific Spirit Regional Park near UBC, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., organized by the GVRD. If you can, take your bike and try out some of the much-touted mountain bike trails in the park. A seven kilometre, self-guided ‘‘Bike for the Environment”’ tour will show you how to be an en- vironmentally conscious cycler, and experts will be on hand to give your bike a free safety check and offer tips on handling skills. Displays will have the latest recycling information available, and demonstrations on everything from paper to sludge recycling will be ongoing throughout the day. Children’s activities will include poster coloring, nature skits, games, performances by actors, jugglers and clowns and fun with Imagination Market. Participants are asked to bring their own mug and picnic utensils so the event is as garbage-free as possible. Food and drink will be available. Entrance to the Eco-Fair is at the intersection of 16th Avenue and Sasamat Street. Admission is free. PLAN YOUR OWN EVENT Many local churches, schools and other community groups are planning their own Earth Day cer- emonies and celebrations. For ex- ample, the North Lonsdale Ratepayers Association will be planting 100 trees at the end of Braemar Road at 10 a.m., while the Save Howe Sound Society is coordinating other tree-planting efforts with some schools and will be hosting booths set up Sunday at Horseshoe Bay and Whytecliff Park. You might choose to plan your own event within your family or your neighborhood. Why not cook a vegetarian, organic meal for the Sunday night dinner? Or plant a tree in the yard with your children? You might also get the neighbors together to discuss a recycling scheme for your area, and arrange a schedule of who will take the goods to the depot each week. If we have a sunny weekend, you could arrange a big family picnic — bike or carpool to get there, and make sure the picnic is “‘garbage-free.”’ However each of us chooses to mark the occasion, my hope is that we all emerge from the day with a greater understanding of the challenges facing us, and a renew- ed sense of commitment with which to meet them.
