8 - Sunday, March 4, 1990 - Morth Shore News Horseshoe Bay couple have surprise home birth DEBBIE AND Gordon Froese weren't expecting a home delivery in the wee hours of the morning — but an 8-Ilb. I4-ounce package named Mallory Gayner was not to be denied. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter Mallory was born at 4:45 a.m. Feb. 18 in the basement of the Horseshoe Bay couple’s home, delivered by Gordon five minutes before the ambulance arrived at the scene. The only direction the 37-year- old airline employee had was the phone advice he received from Debbie’s doctor moments before the birth. “*My wife was saying she didn't realize how long and hard the first one was until she had the second. Four pushes and it was over,"’ Gordon said. It was 1 a.m. when Debbie, a 31-year-old legal secretary, told her husband, who was watching TV, that she was feeling some pain. He said he told her to rest, thinking that the overdue baby would arrive within a few days. But just two and a half hours later she got up to take a shower and told Gordon she was having contractions just 20 minutes apart. The contractions rapidly became almost continuous. “I started running around like Ricky Ricardo from f Love Lucy,’” Gordon said. He decided it would be quicker to take his wife to the hospital than wait for an ambulance to come to their home so he im- mediately woke his 22-month daughter, Lauren, and put her in the car, which was warming up. Then he called the ambulance. “We were arguing and | was running around like crazy. Mainly because I couldn’t convince her to get in the car, but I’m glad she got her way because that baby would have been born probably before we hit Westview,’’ Gordon said. Debbie's physician, Dr. Kathleen Perry, returned Gordon's call just when Debbie was having another contraction. “tm _ literally dressing her and dragging her down the stairs and arguing,’’ he said. “She lay on the floor and said, ‘You're not listening to me. I'm having it right here.’’’ After several calls to Perry and the ambulance, Gordon realized that getting to the hospital was out of the question. “Here we are right on the floor,’’ he said. ‘‘I didn’t even think to wash my hands or any- thing."” Foliowing instructions from Perry, he prepared to help his wie. “It looked really strange. | told the doctor the placenta’s coming WV library hours extended AN EXTRA $5,800 was approved recently by West Vancouver District Council to finance an ex- tension of Sunday operations at West Vancouver Memorial Library by eight weeks, ending June 30. The library required an early approval of the extension because regular budget approval doesn’t occur until May, which is after the normal cessation of Sunday library openings. “The library is vital to young people studying for their exams,” said Ald. Mark Sager, who, along with the rest of council, voted for the extension. But Ambleside Dundarave Ratepayers representative Elaine Fonseca said that ratepayer groups should have access to early budget requests before such approvals are given, |. This accomplished, Perry told him to hold the head and wait for the ambulance attendants, but ‘there was no way she’s going to just hold the head and wait for the ambulance,"’ Gordon said. When Mallory was born, Gor- don felt the pulse and looked at the clock to establish the time she was born. When he opened the door for the ambulance five minutes later, Gordon said his daughter, still in the very warmed up car, told him, “*Daddy. hot.”* The ambulance attendants cut the umbilical cord and took Deb- bie with the newborn to the hospi- tal. “I would bet this is the first born (at home) in West Vancouver definitely this year and probably in a long time,’’ the proud father said. x a RR ee ON " NEWS photo Cindy Goodman PROUD PARENTS Gordon and Debbie Froese and daughter Lauren hold newborn Mallory, the lastest addition to the Froese clan.
