MAILBOX Persecutions not limited to Jews in World War I! Dear Editor: In his May 19th column, Doug Collins describes the fate of the Swabians and their systematic decimation by the Communists. He also comments on the one- sided coverage by the (lef- tist-liberal-Jewish) media, showing the plight of the Jews as the only persecuted ones. What has kappened to the Swa- bians aiso happened to the many Germans living in the east Euro- pean countries. To myself, being of German desceni and living be- fore World War Ii in Poland, it brought back many memories. In Poland the persecution of the German Minority (most were Lu- therans) started long before the first shot in the wer was fired. In summer of 1939, the Poiish Gov- ernment directed anti-German propaganda which reached its peak of hysteria with the infamous “Black Sunday’’ in Bydgoszcz, where without provocation, part of the German community was slaughtered. A.l] over, Germans of all ages were rounded up and mar- ched in ranks towards Poland’s eastern border. Those who could not walk anymore were shot on the spot. I still have a vivid picture of the bloated bodies laying beside the highway. During the very cold winter of 1944/45 the liberation of Poland by the Russian troops, the “‘Volksdeutsche’’, or ethnic Ger- mans, were in for another round of massacre. Those who survived the first round were later put into prisons and concentration camps. I am sure that most Canadians have never heard of Mitecin, a concentration camp iIccated in Central Poland, and you also will not find too many survivors of the early days in Mitecin. I am one of the very few who escaped. Is it a coincidence that today, the word ‘‘Holacaust’’ is used mostly by the mainstream media in connection with the past fate of the Jewish people, ignoring com- pletely the fate of the others, or is it a deliberate manipulation? Living in Canada now and hav- ing brought up a family here on the North Shore, I am ever so grateful to the Canadian people for having given me the opportuni- ty to come to this country, and to open the doors for so many of us who went through the same fate. George Furstenwald North Vancouver Loss of Collins caused loss of interest Dear Editor: I have just read Doug Collins’ column in the June ik edition of your pzper regarding letters to you from Mary-Jaae Shaw and Neil Thompson, and have thus had my conscience jogeed to write long overdue letters this subject. Although I was a member of the Reform Party, hoping it was indeed the party which embodied my ideas of what a potitica] party should be and would stand to put some pressure on the Ottawa mandarins, since the Collins scardal, whercin Preston Manning denied Mr. Collins’ candidacy after it had been ap- the constituency of Capilano-Howe Sound, J no longer have any interest proved overwhelmingly by in the party. another politician’s efforts to win my support for his own personal cause. 1 am sincerely interested in the truth, and thus subscribe to such newsletters as are printed by the Na- tional Citizens Coalition and Citizens for Foreign Aid Reform, and most recently an organization entitled Citizens United for Justice. I an today also writing to the Reform Party to withdraw my membership and to suggest that they save their postage costs in mailing my husband and I their rhetorical newsletter. I might add that although I do not live on the North Shore, I go to great pains to obtain copies of the North Shore News for the specific purpose of reading Mr. Collins’ columns. Though I receive the Reform Party’s newsletter every couple of moniks, I am not interested in reading it, presuming it, rightly, to be full of pap, and just Vancouver Tonnae K. Hennigan Collins ‘losing touch with his senses’ Dear Editor: I think Doug Collins may be about to die of apoplexy over his nual mecting in his June i col- umn? Whether he ‘‘faced down Preston Manning’? as be claimed is bat hs comments about Mary-Jane Shaw prove he is losing - touch with his senses. I, too, attended the meeting in question and witnessed a very dif- ferent scene than he described. Mr. Manning was polite to be sure, but by no means at 2 loss for words. As for Shaw, I remarked to my husband at the time how composed ‘and lovely she appeared. She did speak once or twice, but we had to strain to hear her voice. There was a woman at the meeting who was hollering and interrupting people, but she appeared to be with Mr. Collins. Mr. Collins was huffing and puffing and turning many interest- ing shades of red. His hands were shaking as he read his prepared text and his mouth went dry. He reminded me of a child hav- ing a tantrum while his parents sat calmly waiting for it to end.
