40 - Wednesday, March 29, 1989 ~ North Shore News Blues dynamo worth a listen °° The jeff Healey Band — See The Light, Arista Records 1988 HEALEY’S PLATINUM-selling debut release continues to hold firm on the charts, a bastion of churning blues in a placid sea of pop. The musical press has lavishly praised the 22-year-old blind guitar player, calling him the new B.B. King to, yes, the next Hendrix. A spin through the grooves of See The Light vindicaies all of the fuss the Torontonian is creating across the country. There is not a tentative note to be found in the collection. Whether he’s on the attack with aggressive blistering runs ar stretching out with the sobbing notes, the delivery is im- peccably down and dirty. MICHAEL BECKER record reviewer Listening to a great blues player, regardless of the instrument of choice, should be like eavesdrop- ping on a manic-depressive work- ing through the emotional roller coaster. Healey makes good on around town Fun the promise of vicarious catharsis. I've seen the light. Its color is bluc. ** Eric Ambel — Roscoe’s Gang, Enigma Records 1988 The perspective is nicely askew on this one. Intentionally o¢ not, the release reels and teeters through many manners of musical mode. There’s a bit of grotty garage band posturing, a touch of un- adulterated country sprinkled here and there and a goodly portion of “let's punch our fists through the walls, spill some beer and call it a good time’ raunch ‘n‘ roll, Roscoe (Ambel) is the lead guitarist for the Del-Lords. Includ- ed among the 12 cuts on the release is a grey-matter-melting cover version of the Swamp Dogg tune Total Destruction To Your Mind; a hard-driving version of Dylan’s If You Gotta Go, Go Now; AROUND TOWN, the North Shore News‘ entertainment listing, is the place to look for live theatre, concerts, galleries, dance events, and pub Shore Delta Mountain Inn, Whistler: Sex Tips For Modern Girls. In the correct frame of mind, it would provide fitting background for that Friday aight wing-ding you might be planning. *** The Feelies — Only Life, A&M Records 1988 It’s strange how the music of this New Jersey band affects people. The surface blandness of the music simply irritates those in a hurry to latch on to an easy musical hook or snappy turn of phrase. North Shore Centennial Theatre: Natural Elements.
