Van library expansion funding appointed WEST VANCOUVER’S Memorial Library, which enjoys the highest per capita use in the Lower Mainland, recently received a funding commitment from West Vancouver District Council for an expansion proposal. Council agreed to put aside $400,000 each year, for three years, starting in 1989, towards the expansion needed to resolve cur- fent overcrowding and allow for expected future growth. Having undergone a major renovation and expansion in the 1970s, the Memorial Library has again run into space problems. Some materials are now being stored off-site at Hillside Middle School, a practice that is labor in- tensive and costly. Following a 1987 study, in- dependent consultants advised that the library was 15,000 sq. ft. short of efficient space as of 1986, a problem that would continue to worsen by 1,000 sq.ft. a year. The Memorial Library Founda- tion is hoping to raise the money needed for an on-site expansion, constructed in phases, which would cost an estimated total of $4.7 million. According to the head of West Vancouver Memorial Library, Jack Mounce, the first priority would be a replacement of the children’s wing, which he describ- ed as ‘‘nice but wasteful of space.’’ The replacement would be a four-storey structure, with two floors below the main tucked into the ravine. A future option would be a pa- vilion (including art gallery) on the existing parking deck, which might require the use of the North Shore Union Board of Health office site to the west to make up the lost parking. Frovincial and federal funding will be sought to augment the 1989-91 $1.2 million commitment from council. Starting in 1992, council may commit an additional sum up to a maximum of $400,000 a year (for See Library Page 10 | EXCITING | | “PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE” SEMINAR NANCY AUSTIN, tm BRS” Co. author with Te of The Bes “A PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE THE LEADERSHIP DIFERENCE” PLACE: NEW WORLD HARBOURSIDE 1133 W.
