But parent education is not a new phenomenon. Parenting was taught as far back as the 1850s in the States, says Greenberg. An author, Catherine Beecher, wrote a popular how-to guide on domesticity, called Treatise on Domestic Economy, which devoted several chapters to paren- ting. Another popular period for ‘parental guidance"' was the Twenties. “Once again, we are witnessing parents desire for more information on child- bearing,"’ Greenberg said. “With the influx of studies on children, the Message has filtered down to parents today that raising a child is a serious enterprise.’’ Despite all the expert ad- vice and the wealth of self- help books, most child care specialists, including Brenda Greenberg, say there are “many right ways’’. The Positive Parenting program, the course which North Shore Family Services offers in an eight-week, 16- hour series, promotes that philosophy based on Californian psychiatrist Thomas Gordon’s thecries. Less structured than many parent education programs, Positive Parenting ‘helps parents discover the values _ they want to pass on to their children, develop open lines of listening and a positive attitude towards being a “parent.” But Greenberg, who has taught the program, says it’s also beneficial because the parents can draw on a reser- voir of common experiences among the members. Positive Parenting workshops provide skills and mutual support, but even without that plenty of love, affection and respect can go a long way in raising children. Fees for Positive Paren- ting workshops are $30 single and $50 couple. For more information, call North Shore Family Services at 988-528! or 926-7851.
