FLU BUG or no flu bug, the high number of
teachers booking off for illness has West Van-
couver School Trustee Michael Smith upset ... not
over the health of the teachers, but the devastating
cost of providing substitutes.

In the first four months ot
this school year, teacher
absenteeism has eaten away
$121,424 of the $195,000
allocated to providing
substitutes. This according to
Acting Superintendent Ron
Fenwick was due to a very
“*bad flu bug”’

But that was not good
enough for Smith, who told
the News that there would be
no further altlocahion 9 of
moneys ina very ight budget
for substitution pay

“At Chis rate we will be
$100,000 budgct."
Smith said
