Young people, with their high unemployment rate, are particularly concerned about what they should do. Monday, Oct. 17, marks the start of Block Parent week, during which special emphasis will be put on the preventative program that of- fers shelter to children in distress. In West Vancouver, says Cst. Dave Marskell, the police have a big thank you for the Block Parents but no need for a big push. “‘We don’t really have to make a big push,’’ says Mar- skell, ‘‘The program is operating so well.’’ North Vancouver’s pro- gram has also been a success. Cst. Rod Booth of the Crime Prevention Unit says there are more than 1,000 Block Parents in place. More, however, wouldn't hurt, as police take aim at a target of at least one Block Parent for every block in the area. The Block Parent program has won quick community acceptance since its inception in London, Ont., in 1968. Each Block Parent, a volunteer, displays a large poster in a front widnow adervertising their home as a haven for children being bothered by a stranger, a bul- Going public with safety A PARENT-TEACHER safety committee, formed in the wake of the death of a school girl in a crosswalk two years ago, is expanding its efforts. The group has been operating for the benefit of students in the area of Larson Elementary.
