advertising scams in

recent movie ad-
vertising.

The movie is An Officer
and a Gentleman, which has
been billed: as a ‘great |
romance.

Half page advertisements
in the daily papers in softly
defined lines, show a woman
being carried off by a man in
true Gone With the Wind
style, indeed it is almost a
conscious take-off of the

Behind this dreamy vision
is a another. vaguely defined
line of military types looking
like they're in the middle of a
World War Il Hollywood
style battle scene.

Put. the-ad:.together with
the movie title: and you
expect an old time ba
‘romance, with our hero (in
this case Richard Gere)

dealing with passion and
duty in the grand old movie
style.

To make a long story
short, I decided to see the
movie having read and heard
what a good movie it was.
And having seen the ad I

thought I knew what to
expect.

I was wrong.

Most of those in the
audience I surreptitiously
scrutinized (as one does just
before ‘the lights go down)
‘were middle aged couples
and young girls.

The lights went down, the
movie began and the little
tiger came cavorting out to
tell us the movie was
restricted — news to me.

The first scene of naked,
passion-twisted, middle aged
limbs, corroborated the fact.

And the movie went
downhill from there, though
I should mention that the
acting was excellent.

The rest of the movie was
just a new and sordid version

Replace romance with
sex, army with modern navy
training camp, and you have
the right idea.

Sex solves the problem of
conversation, as the main
characters find out the night
they meet, and they run out
of small talk (or exchange of
names). _

It solves the problem of
admitting any personal
involvement. The old
fashioned movie words “I
love you” — “I love you too”
are by “Last night

as fantastic” — “It was
great for me too.”

Women are not portrayed
on pedestals as in the ald
movies, instead they are
thrown in the mire and
trampled on. They are good
for sex, and if they don't get
pregnant and trap you, then
you go back to your fiance
