THE North Shore is not just a great place to live " because of its scenery. The people who call it home are a pretty nice crowd t If our survey is accurate, we are a lot more understanding of the problems facing the mentally iff than most other places in Canada. We based our question this week on a fact contained in News reporter Katharine Hamer’s Sunday story on the mentally ill, According to a recent survey conduct- ed by the Canadian Mental Health Association, 88% of Canadians believe that the mentally il! are more prone to violent behaviour than the rest of society. Our North Shore stats are the exact opposite of that study, but then perhaps you all read Sunday's story. Sources involved in mental health services quoted in Hamer'’s story made it clear that not only has violence been decreasing in society, the mentally ill are less prone to violent outbursts than “normal” members of society. Unfortunately, in an age of instant media communication, high-profile cases of vio- Jence are heard about by all of us and continue to create toe much fear.
