Sunday, February 17, 1991 - North Shore News - 39 SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING Creation Centre emphasizes the many paths of worship WHEN STEVE Everson graduated from college, he didn’t find just any job. He set out to found a new church in West Vancouver. During his schooling at the Ernest Holmes College of Minis- terial Studies, Everson worked at the Vancouver Church of Religious Science, which is based on the ‘Science of Mind’’ philos- ophy. Upon his graduation, he was urged to establish his own church. “It came into being because we felt there wasn’t a ‘new-thought’ -Church on the North Shore,” Everson explained. “It’s been a great challenge for five months. We have 35 members so far.” The Creation Centre, as the church is called, is licensed as a Start-up “aurch with the United Church of Religious Science. It has 18 months to get 50 chartered members signed on, and Everson says he's sure that won’t be 2 problem. Asked to describe the Science of By Peggy Trendeli-Whittaker News Reporter Mind philosophy, Everson talks about the movement's history, beginning with its founding by Ernest Holmes. Holmes, he says, studied all the great religions of the world and found ‘‘they were all saying the same thing.” The truths he found in different religions, such as the importance of ‘“‘doing unto others as you would have them do unto you,’’ form the basis of the Science of Mind thought. It also emphasizes a personal relationship with God, and en- courages church-goers to develop their own individual concept of spirituality. For Everson, this means “There is a oneness between myself and God. God isn’t outside of me; God is part of me. Everything that exists is part of God.’” While the Creation Centre ac- cepts the different religious at- titudes and backgrounds of its fol- lowers, not everyone accepts the Creation Centre’s philosophy. There have been ‘‘a few calls and letters from people who believe there’s only one way’’ to worship, Everson reports. But it appears to be this sort of attitude that is swelling the Cre- ation Centre’s ranks, “Our members seem to all be coming because they are searching for an alternative to a fundamen- talist church,’” he says. The church meets Sunday mor- nings at the West Vancouver Masonic Hall, 1763 Bellevue Ave. A meditation begins at 10:45 a.m., and the service starts at II a.m. The Creation Centre is cur- rently seeking any ‘‘heart-centred musicians’? who would Ike to join the service, especially a regular piano player. The federal legistation, The Combines Investigation Act, regu- lates all forms of commercial advertising, including statements made by telephone solicitors or sales people in stores, and even pictures and wording that appear on product containers or wrap- pers. In B.C. the provincial Trade Practice Act offers protection against deceptive advertising.
