1 2 — Wednesday, January 4, 1989 - Capilano Chronicle °89 WATER BILL ON THE WAY Hidden costs increase annual levy for North Van’s ‘good, pure H20’ COMING SOON YOUR 1989 water bill will soon be delivered, again offering, a 10 per cent reduction to homeowners who pay by Feb. 28. As this year’s levy has increased, you might be interested in some of the facts and figures that make up the water utility we so often take for granted when we turn on-the tap. _ FROM THE MAYOR’S CHATR Some of the ‘thidden” costs associated with water service are the underground pipes — 350 kilometres of them across our municipality — representing $16,400,000 of capital investment. This infrastructure requires care and repair as well as periodic upgrading to ensure reliable delivery to North Vancouver - District properties of nearly a billion gallons annually of | that good, pure H20 of which we are all so proud. 4 . Annual charges, both flat fees and metered rates, are based on the actual operating costs for run- ning this self-financed utility — approximately $3.4 million in 1989. These expenses include purchase of water from the Greater Van- couver Water District (4¢ per gallon), maintenance of the water works, new capital expenditures and contingencies for emergencies like the. Montroyal blowout of 1985 which cost $105,000 in dam- age repairs. You may well ask how North Vancouver District compares to other municipalities in providing this service. In’ 1989 West Van- couverites will pay $129; Rich- mond,: Surrey and Coquitlam charges are $78 to $80; and Van- couver is $100. This year our homeowners’: discounted rate is $94.50. Given the size and topog- raphy of our community, we fare quite well, ~ RECENTLY AIRED On Dec. 15 at Capilano Library some 80 people took advantage of the opportunity to preview a2 rezoning application for 2425 Edgemont Blvd. A municipal policy requests proponents to meet with the com- munity before an application comes to council.
