Bearing wall or not?
If you want to tear out one
wall of a room you wish to
enlarge you must first deter-
mine that it is not a bearing
wail.

Drill a hole through the ceil-
ing next to the wall, and
poke a long stiff wire through
it, parallel with the wall. If the
wire strikes an obstruction
within a few inches, the joists
very probably are at right
angles to the.wall, indicating
it may be a bearing wall. To
make sure of this you must
enlarge the hole enough so
you can look up and deter-
mine whether the joists end
over the wall (in which case,
it's a bearing wall) or all run
parallel (in which case its a
non bearing wail )
