But concerned golfers have nothing to fear, Pike said. The parks director said on Wednesday that, based on the pre- sent proposal, the course will undergo only minor changes — the most signiticant of which is the shortening of the golf course's 9th hole by approximately 30 yards. “Glencagles is near and dear to (West Vancouver) and we do nor want to destroy ir,” said Pike in a recent interview. “It makes (approximately) $330,000 a vear and we don’t want to affect that.” He calls the recreation centre and golf course combination “a classic win-win” situation. Also of great importance to the plan is the proposal to move several blocks of Marine Drive cast to allow a better use of the KEVIN Pike, West Van director of parks and recre- ation, studies a proposal for a community centre. A new Marine Drive connection is slated to be constructed just north of the present roadway. This, according to Pike, would eliminate the need for expensive road bridging to link the properties on either side of Marine Drive. The cost to move the road is estimated at $455,000 — approxi- mately half the price of bridging. He says that moving the road would also allow the avo new recreation neighbors to share the buildings, facilities and programs more effectively. “We wanted them to connect,” he said. The reclaimed road land would initially accommodate increased parking facilities. But the land would also provide the municipality with greater versatility if the district chooses to proceed with plans for a new pool or ice rink. Pike confirms that a new poct and/or ice rink are only options for the future and are not being considered at this time. The plan to build the new 30,000-square-foot western region recreation centre has been in the works for several years. It is being designed to replace Eagle Harbour Community Ceatre, which currently operates out of small, school-type portables of approxi- mately 5,000 square feet, located behind Eagle Harbour school. Eagle Harbour Community Centre used to operate out of the Eagle Harbour elementary school building afer the schoo! closed back in 1984. But ali this can change now due to the municipality’s 1994 pur- chase of 27 acres of BC Rail land, a portion of which lies adjacent to Gleneagles Golf Course. Pike called the need to replace Eagle Harbour “essential,” and emphasized that the new western centre would “clearly be a see- ond centre and not just (2 centre) for the west.” The new three-level centre would include a gym, a vouth area, art facilities and a new outdoor sport room. There is also the potential for banquet facilities on the lower level. Pike says this is the first step in a “couple of stages” designed to upgrade all the district's recreation facilities. He says planning is also under way to upgrade West Vancouver's main recreation ccn- tre. “We have definitely fallen behind,” said Pike, referring to the need for improved facilities. “And it’s time we got around to repiacing them.” Anyone wishing to attend an open house on the recreation pro- posal can attend one of several information meetings: @ March 4 — Gleneagles Clubhouse, 6190 Marine Dr., West Vancouver, 4 — 9 p.m. (for area residents) @ March 1] — Gleneagles Clubhouse, 7 p.m. — 9:30 p.m. (for golf members) @ March 31 — Gleneagles Clubhouse, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. (for gen- eral public) April 2 — WV Seniors Centre, 695 21st St., West Vancouver, + p.m. — 9:00 p.m. (for general public) @ April 4 — Gleneagles Clubhouse, 9 a.m. — ! p.m. (for gener- al public) . uver recCentre = North .
