A neliceman’s perspective

YO, boneheads! It’s
story time again.

As [sit here entering yeat
five as the North Shore's sole
traffic critic, suffering a wee
bout of apathy and perhaps
SMightly stricken with a mild
case of despondeney, [realize
that my seemingly ineftectaal
weekly column is not, in fact,
a fruitless endeavour.

A recent testimonial trom
Const. Bryan Fedirchuk of the
North Vancouver RCMP
Trattic Section lett me shaking
my bead in mild dismay, but 1
did note an upside in his
story...

“This particular incident,”
Const. Fedirchuk explained,
“occurred just before
Christmas last year. T was
working moving-radar
(mobile, dash-mounted speed-
trap) on Capilano Road. I was
trying to catch up to a vehicle
that was speeding north-
bound, using my emergency
lights and sirens.”

(As you may have sur-
mised, this is yet another col-
umn with an emergency-vehi-
cle theme. Can’t get enough
of these, it seems, but not
because they’re a joy to write;
rather, because there are still a
number of boncheads who
need a good talking to.)

“I could sce all south-

right-hand curb by the
Suspension Bridge.” the con-
stable continued. “Likewise,
vehicles in front of me —
except one — had pulled to
the right to allow me to pass
(as required by law). This one
vehicle though, had simply
stopped in the middle of the
road.” It appears that Const.
Fedirchuk was having a close
encounter with a typical bone-
head deiver who didn’t
know/eare about legal
requirements when confronted
by an active emergency vehi-
cle. The officer decided to pass
the idiot on the left, since
there wasn’t any room on the
night and secing that the idiot
had, in fact, just stopped.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t a
typical bonehead sitting there
in the middle of the road. No
sir, this was a driver with 2
substantially oversized,
astoundingly thick, high densi-
ty skull. A bonchead of epic

propartions.

“As TE pulled to the lett te
pass, the stopped vehicle pro
ceeded to TORN LEFT into
the Suspension Bridge parking
lot. In essence, this vehicle
turned in trant of me and
never once hesitated 17 its
turn, cutting me off and fore

te avoid collision.”

At this point Const.
Fedirchuk, police officer ina
police car with lights a-blazing
and sirens awailing that he
was, cancelled his pursuit of
the speeder and instead con-
fronted the idiot who just cut
him off. The idiot’s excuse?
“He said he did not sce or
hear the police vehicle,” said
Const. Fedirchuk, who pro-
ceeded to “thoroughly impress
upon” the bonehead the
importance of vielding to
emergency vehicles and, for
this particular instance, the
importance of paving, attention
in the first place.

A good story with a happy
ending when you think about
it. No one was hurt and the
speeder got away, A heart
warming tale to ease my jaded,
apathetic little heart. You see,
most of the drivers in this
story DID pull to the right, as
required by law. See, Iam get-
ting through to some people.
