bananas, ferns and palms, the leaves or fronds can be

. cut back leaving only a trunk to protect. A two- to

three-foot cylinder of chicken wire is placed around
the plant and filled with dry leaves. The whole struc-
ture is covered with 6 mm (.25 in. ) plastic and secured
with cords and duct tape. The insu!ation from the dry
leaves and dead air spaces provides the Protection
necessary for the plants.

Another trend gaining in popularity is the use of

. water features. Estate gardens have always had water

courses, small lakes or reflecting pools as an integral
part of their landscape design. Here on the North
Shore it was not uncommon to see a small fish pond

selection of equipment, the desire for a water feature
is being fulfilled.

Ina recent local gardening publication, there were
seven companies advertising water garden construc:

are expected to be busy.

“The best advice we can give our
customers is ‘plan ahead.” Get to the
terminals early and, if. you can,
schedule your trip to avoid those pre-
dictably busy periods like late Friday
and late Monday.

“Traffic will build: on Friday as
people begin their travels and then on
monday afternoon: and evening, as

they retum home, our system will be

extremely busy.” There will likely be
some spill-over on Tuesday. added
