Dr. Janes: Dry food is recommended for all breeds, but especiaily large breeds. Some smaller breeds may require canned foods in order to ensure they take in sufficient calories. Premium brands are recommended for ail pets. Though more costly, the benefits out- weigh the added expense. Pups less than 8 weeks old should be fed 4 times a day. Over 2 months, they can be fad 3 times per day. This is con- tinued untit 5 to 6 months of age, after which time, twice daily feeding is suffi- cient, As dags become adults, feed them either once or twice ‘daily. While some dogs only want to eat once a day, others prefer to eat more often. If your dog will eat two times a day, continue feeding twice daily. Do not leave food down all the time at any age. To establish what quantity of food to feed your pup, put down a bowl of food and fet your pup eat. Alter 10 minutes, when your pup has stopped eating, take the bow! up. Measure the amount of food offered and the amount remaining. After a while it will be easy to establish the amount your pup will consume. Monitor your pup’s stool. If itis a little toose (soft), you are feeding too much. 1! it is exces- sively dry, you aren't feeding enough. A firm moist stool indicates you are feed- ing the right amount. Q: What do! do if| see a stranded seal pup on the beach? . Or. Grognet: A few years ago, two seal pups found on the beach and one found & trying to cross the freeway near Mud Bay were brought into the hospital. hours. The mother may just be off feed- ing. If the mother does not return, then call the aquarium or your local velerinar- ian. The most important care of the new- born seal is temperature regulation. They must be kept cool by immersing them in cold water until aquarium staff arrive. The rehabilitation program. at the Vancouver Aquarium releases seals back into the wild. The pup found by Mud Bay was dubbed “Freeway” and he was only recently released. Send your questions to Dr. Janes & Dr. Grognet care of this newspaper. FOo30 cei.
