; THIS COULD be a lot of fun. fun. Think ‘about it with me, and. _ if you feel like‘ putting your- _. Saf out, give me a call, or talk . «to Leslie Baker, who does the programming for Elder College for their ongoing ses- sions (the number is 984- 1700). You see, there’s this committee * huddling all year long over plans to try to cover the variety of subjects that you and I entertain. Anne : . Vernon, whom you may know for her involvement in West Vancouver's: ~.” Museum, Wears one of these hats, “and it was she who called me about an idea they were mulling for the - very diversity we're wrapped up in, and hit on the possibility that senior - people might be persuaded to talk ' “about their own lives. . - Well, sure, a splendid idea, we have amongst us all manner of peo- - “ple whose lives have been studded with adventure and others who have “made a difference to the world and . Many of both sorts are unsung. But - she was asking me for mine. I “ couldn’t have been more taken ': Saback, P've been here and there in lian tales However, when she uncovered more of the planners’ reasoning, | could see that the idea was quite provocative and that logic lay behind the request. Tums out it's not neces- sarily adventure they're looking for, you ste, not derring-do. As Anne put it to me, it's my Canadianisim that they're after. Apparently —- you see I’ve not been keeping up — amongst those grown-ups attending Elder College there is a large proportion of people who have come from other places, from Britain and Australia and _ Uganda and China and Timbuctoo. It's quite logical that they should like to spend time with their peers, absorbing a different culture. So they see us Canadians, but only against today’s background. They have no idea of how we got this way. A lot of ‘them have come as mature people, some when their working lives are behind them, and so the contacts they make outside the college are fewer, Any sort of invasion of our past years probably zilch. Thus they see us only in our cur- rent advanced stage of development and so have no real background information to help them understand what sort of people we really are, how we got this way. They‘ve no conception of this country in its early years, and of what a brief time - it’s taken for the changes to become fall. They'd been discussing this © wee _ established. Put that way, I could see some virtue in myself describing the. life I was born to in our then remote -’ North country, taking it for granted _ that its discomforts and inadequacies‘ were my lot in life. The food we ate for a number of those years was largely wild; the reat, venison and grouse and rabbit, brought down by my stepfather’s accurate gunman- ship. We picked wild berries and -'were very excited indeed when we - saw hew shoots of dandelion in the spring that we could take. home to months. For the six, seven months of winter our only vegetables were from the root-house, our only out- side information from a weekly bun- dle of newspapers. The only hospitality we were able to practise was towards the Red Cross nurse, who sometimes brought her weli-wrapped violin and helped us make a concert arcund the pot- bellied heater. The coyotes howled from our very doorstep, where our mother put out the potato-peelings for the rabbits. So for starters, I thought I'd unteash the saga of how we got to be there in the first place, of our epic journey inte the Peace River country in 1924, About a three- hour journey from railhead that took us three days to complete in a Ford touring model that had hook-on isin- glass curtains to keep the rain out. Mr. Ford, unfortunately, had not done anything to waterproof the roof material, ; For the second occasion, (two's my limit), 1 plan to describe my first position as the eightcen-year-old mistress of a one-room school in the British Columbia bush in the Thirties. Both of those experiences can never more be replayed, televi- sion and radio have seen to that. But you can’t make a programme out of _ Wo reminiscences. The College needs at least six slots of material. So let’s do it together. All your wonderful lives, . chock full of tales of your schooling, - of your first job, of your home life, Will you join me? And if your home life was ‘spent in another country, so much the bet- ter, Parts of what you'll tell us we'll all have experienced, because we've all grown up and made our lives go one way or another, but there will be differences that will astonish us and make us gasp and make us laugh and bring us all closer to one anoth- ©." er THE CORPORATION OF THE DISTRICT OF WEST VANCOUVER , 750-17th Street, West Vancouver, B.C.
